SATURDAY, MAY 5
The Come Ons at the Garage.
After two decades of a whole lotta nothing, Detroit is finally living up to
its "Rock City" appellation again with the rise of coolly revisionist combos
the White Stripes, the Detroit Cobras and the Come Ons, who have no interest
in wearing Iggy Pop's old shoes. The Come Ons come off more like early-'60s
Motown girl groups on their eponymous debut (Sympathy for the Record
Industry), as Ko's ballpark-organ churnings imbue the 17 mostly original,
jukebox-ready tunes with a properly sunny, circus-y feeling of childhood
nostalgia. It's all retro, but sublimely so, thanks to the new queen of
serene, front woman Deanne, who sings "What's a Girl To Do?" and "Red Lips &
Fingertips" with such groovy, beguiling resignation. Don't wanna nag, but
this is their L.A. debut, and you'll wanna say you were there. (Falling
James)
(NOTE: The band actually ended up canceling this show, and to date hasn't
performed in L.A., although they did come as near as Vegas at the second Las
Vegas Shakedown festival.)
