Leaving Trains - Brownies 5/17
I have to admit that I love the Leaving Trains, and not just cause James wears a dress. This was the first time the Trains had played New York in a couple of years, although Falling James had done a solo gig in the winter, and it was great to see them back. They did a lot of old stuff like "So Fucked Up" and "Fuck you God" ;

hmmm... Maybe James needs to learn a new expletive. New guitarist Melanie (ex-Muffs and Pandoras) added to the power of the bands with her no bullshit style, and bassist Jimmy had a thick druggy sound that reminded me a little of the Stooges. Dennis Carlin is probably my favorite drummer on the planet, cause he doesn't just play the drums, he plays the songs; also he wears orange pants. The inimitable Falling James was the focus of the evening, resplendent in tight dress and heels, begging the audience for sex, drugs, and junk food. He's singing with more confidence than ever these days and his unforced stage banter marks him as a natural ham. I've heard it said that the Leaving Trains are one of those bands that on any given night are either great or awful, but Falling James especially seems to thrive under adverse conditions, so that when problems arise he demonstrates his ability as a self-deprecating, off-the-cuff entertainer. A great show.
