The Now Time Delegation, We Go Speedro at Fais Do-Do.

There are moments on the Now Time Delegation's debut CD, Watch for Today (In the Red), when the feedback from Tim Kerr's dirt-digging guitar soars away out of control, as big and fat and pervasively monstrous as Kari Luna's thick sheets of gospel-imbued Hammond organ. Such a punk-unsentimental attack from former Big Boys/Poison 13 guitarist Kerr (not to be confused with the label that used his name) gives a modern urgency to the Delegation's defiantly retro covers of Eddie Floyd (ital)and(italic) King Floyd, as well as Kerr's impressive approximations of '60s soul and rockin' blues. That and the fact that the lead singer happens to be the superior Lisa Kekaula, making a satisfying side trip from her main gig, the BellRays. She takes over uptempo stompers like "Little Miss Fortune" and "Stand and Deliver" with soul-baring authority, inhabits bluesy ballads "Handle Me With Care" and Curtis Mayfield's "Keep on Pushin'" with rueful elegance, and might even have a hit with her celebrate-the-pain-away remake of the Flirtations' "Nothing But a Heartache." There's nothing new here, but only Otis Redding and Koko Taylor have done it better. Don't miss the muscular bass-flipping dexterity of Mike Watt's San Pedro-perspective Stooges tribute, We Go Speedro. (Falling James)
