Barbara Manning & the Go-Luckys at the Silverlake Lounge.

All of Barbara Manning’s merry musical wanderings — whether solo or with prescient San Franternative groups 28th Day, SF Seals and Glands of External Secretion — are driven by a poet’s restless compulsion to capture magical, ephemeral moments and ideas definitively, with something like universal resonance. "While you were sleeping/Clocks were ticking/ Babysitting for the sun," she confides languidly during "Rhombus" on her new CD, YOU SHOULD KNOW BY NOW (Innerstate). "Tide slipped out/When you weren’t looking/The ocean . . . so careless/With belongings/Scatters her things constantly." There are other such lovely moments of hushed intimacy, like "Incapable" and the earthy (literally: "kissing on the ground") sensuality of "Never Made Love." But the real thrill on YOU SHOULD KNOW comes from Manning’s collaboration with her German pair of Go-Lucky siblings, drummer Flavio Steinbach and bassist Fabrizio Steinbach, who power "You Knock Me Out," "Don’t Neglect Yourself" and the poignant instrumental "Boston Song" with unexpected punk energy, an exhilarating contrast with Manning’s serene vocals.
